The Biblioteca Pública Gabriel García Márquez is a striking public library located in Parque El Tunal, Bogotá, D.C., spanning 73,470 square feet (6,826 sq meters). Completed on February 15, 2001, this architectural gem was designed by Tectus Ltda., with contributions from Architect Manuel Antonio Guerrero and Architect Suely Vargas Nobrega, following a competitive national bid.
The library serves six urban neighborhoods, seamlessly integrating with the park’s master plan. Its design features a dramatic curved metal roof unifying the main volume, flanked by smaller structures housing an auditorium and a children’s reading room. The exterior showcases exposed brickwork, contrasting with the interior’s spacious, fluid layouts centered around a soaring triple-height hall.
Organized into five functional zones—adult and children’s sections, cultural extension, administrative areas, and a central café plaza—the library balances symmetry with dynamic asymmetry, creating a vibrant civic landmark.
